Several thousands security people have been on alert for the upcoming 5th BRICS summit, the South African police announced Saturday.

"South Africa is ready to host the BRICS summit with a collaborative integrative security plan," said South Africa's National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega as she was addressing the security issues at the BRICS summit in the southern port city of Durban.

BRICS is an acronym for the grouping of the world's leading emerging economies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, and the 5th BRICS summit is scheduled to be held in Durban on Tuesday.

It will be the first time for South Africa to host the BRICS summit since it officially became a membership of the group on Dec. 24, 2010.

"More than 3000 law enforcement officials representing various security forces across the country have been in place," said the official."They will serve with dignity, pride and restraint."

The government official made sure that the summit will be held in a safe environment, saying "we are going to have a safe and secure event."

"We have a good reputation as world leaders of successfully hosting events of this magnitude," said she.
