Ethiopia's ruling party kicks off congress

The Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), the ruling party in Ethiopia, on Saturday kicked off the 9th Organizational Congress with the theme of "With Thoughts of Meles Stronger Organization and Development Focus for the Renaissance".

The four-day Congress being held in Bahir Dar town, about 562 km north of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital, mainly deliberates on the implementation of the country's five-year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) among other issues.

The Congress will also put direction for the remaining implementation period of the GTP (2010/11-2014/15).

During the Conference, the Party is also expected to elect its Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson.

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, who is also EPRDF Chairperson, has officially opened the Conference.

Representatives of parties from about 13 countries have attended the opening ceremony of the Congress, some of whom conveyed solidarity messages.

Chinese Delegation led by Chen Fengxiang, Vice Minister of International Department of CPC, has been to Ethiopia to attend the 9th Organizational Congress of EPRDF.

Songs by school children and musical drama were among the activities of the opening ceremony.
