The South African government on Monday confirmed 13 peacekeepers were killed and 27 others injured in a clash with rebels in the Central African Republic (CAR).

One soldier was still missing, according to the South African National Defense Force (SANDF).

On Sunday the SANDF said its peacekeeping soldiers were killed and injured during the clashes with the rebels in the CAR over the weekend.

It was reported that the heavily armed rebels stormed the CAR capital of Bangui after they accused President Bozize of reneging on the terms of the latest peace agreement, killing those South African soldiers who were guarding the presidential palace.

In January about 200 South African peacekeeping soldiers were deployed to the troubled country of CAR to support the ill- equipped government troops following an offensive launched by the rebels in early December.
