Security is tight as banks in the Cypriot capital Nicosia prepare to open for the first time in a week.

Armed police officers guarded several trucks carrying unidentified containers as they arrived at Cyprus’s Central Bank. The contents of the trucks could not be independently confirmed, although the state-run television channel reported they were carrying cash flown in from Frankfurt for the banks’ reopening.

The banks will operate for six hours starting from noon. But restrictions will be placed on financial transactions to prevent people from emptying their accounts. Cyprus’s central bank said cash withdrawals would also be limited to 300 Euros a day, while credit card use abroad would be restricted to 5,000 Euros per month. However, credit card use within Cyprus will remain unlimited.
