A civilian lost his foot in a mine blast near line of control (LoC) in Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said Tuesday.

The mine planted blindly went off after the civilian stepped on it in Nowshera sector of frontier Rajouri district around 195 km northwest of Jammu city, the winter capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"A civilian Dharam Pal was hit in his right foot in a mine blast in the Nowshera sector on Monday," said Col R K Palta, Indian army spokesman in Jammu. "The individual is presently undergoing treatment at an army hospital and his foot has been amputated."

Pal had gone into the area for grazing his cattle, when according to officials he entered into a marked minefield resulting in blast of a mine planted beneath the ground.

During the past more than two decades of ongoing armed insurgency in Indian-controlled Kashmir, many people were killed or left crippled after inadvertently fiddling with the explosives or stepping upon the land mines planted blindly in the region particularly along LoC.

Rights groups in the region have long been demanding the clearance of land mines and sensitization of the areas in the region.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and the Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989.

Meanwhile reports Tuesday said another villager was wounded after a bullet hit him in the leg at a firing range in Nowshera. The villager according to police had gone into the army's practicing area during a practice session to collect empty cartridges. He was immediately shifted to hospital and was stated to be stable.
