The rebel March 23 movement (M23) has opposed the deployment of a rapid intervention brigade in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), according to the latest statement from the group.

"The M23 reiterates its opposition to any move that might cause war, because war has left a number of victims among our fellow citizens and has sacrificed entire generations," the statement said.

The movement urged the United Nations to avert the possibility of any other war erupting in the Central African country, "because the population would not obey a regime that causes suffering to them or kills them."

The UN Security Council recently decided to create an intervention brigade in the east of DR Congo to disarm the rebel forces including M23.

In its statement, M23 warned that the UN decision would result in war.

"From now henceforth, we shall be supporting all the citizens' groups that demand good governance in our country, including those who are engaged in talks with their government to resolve the societal challenges," the statement added.

On March 28, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution to reinforce the UN Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO) by creating, for the first time, a rapid intervention brigade which will be composed of 3,000 officers from South Africa, Tanzania and Malawi.

The mission of the rapid intervention brigade is to neutralize armed groups operating in the east of DR Congo.
