A large-scale farm market selling a wide selection of "locally sourced produce" will open this month in the western Japanese prefecture of Nara, local press reported on Wednesday.

The new market shop called Mahoroba Kitchen, coordinated by a local agricultural cooperative association, will fully open near the main street of Kashihara City in the prefecture on April 14, and will be one of the biggest shops of its kind in Japan, according to Nippon Hoso Kyokai (NHK), the country's public broadcaster.

The report said the new shop will offer agricultural and locally-processed products from fruit and vegetables to dairy, meat, flowers and cakes, which will be supplied by more than 1,100 members of the agricultural cooperative.

In addition, Tatsuya Tohsaka, a spokesperson for Nara Prefecture, said to Xinhua that several restaurants and a food court will be also opened, including one serving high quality food prepared by a Michelin star trained chef, inside the building with a total floor area of about 5,000 square meters, adding that the prefecture also constructs a tourist information center with dedicated staff to introduce the ancient heritage of Nara for tourists from all over the world.

He stressed that the shop will become a place where visitors to Nara can anytime enjoy having communication with local farmers, all of whom are proud of their products, and boost local economy through a series of commercial acts of selling goods directly from producers to consumers.
