The Hong Kong city government said Friday night that initial test results for the respiratory specimens of the seven-year-old girl who came down with flu symptoms after visiting Shanghai last month showed negative for the H7N9 bird flu.

The Center for Health Protection of the Hong Kong Department of Health said it received notification from a local hospital of a female patient who visited Shanghai, Jiangsu and Hunan with her family from March 23 to April 3.

The girl developed fever and sore throat on Friday and was sent to hospital. She is now admitted to the isolation ward for further management and her condition has been stable all along.

"Influenza A (H7) is a statutorily notifiable infectious disease in Hong Kong, and no human cases of Influenza A (H7N9) have been recorded so far," said a spokesman for the Hong Kong Department of Health.

Travelers, especially those returning from Shanghai, Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, with fever or respiratory symptoms are urged to wear facial masks immediately, seek medical attention and reveal their travel history to doctors, he said.

As of Friday afternoon, the Chinese mainland has reported 16 H7N9 cases nationwide -- six in Shanghai, six in Jiangsu, three in Zhejiang and one in Anhui, in the first known human infections of the lesser-known strain.

So far, six people have died from H7N9 infections in Shanghai and Zhejiang.
