9 militants killed in Afghan military operation

Up to nine militants have been killed and 16 others got injured in an on- going military operation in western Afghan province of Badghis, an army source said Sunday.

"Afghan army and police conducted a military operation code named Almas or Diamond on Thursday. So far, nine armed Taliban militants killed and 16 wounded as we know," a senior army official in the province, Gen. Daud Shah Wafadar, told Xinhua.

He said three local Taliban leaders named Mullah Mansour, Abdul Hakim and Mana were among the dead.

The source also said that two cops were wounded and several militants' hideout were also destroyed in the operation covering Bala Murghab, Qadis and Muqur districts in the province 555 km northwest of Afghan Kabul.

The Taliban insurgent group, which has been waging an insurgency of more than one decade, has yet to make comments.

The security forces have recently intensified operations across the country as spring and summer known as the fighting season is drawing near. But the insurgent groups responded by bombings.

On Saturday, three U.S. soldiers, two foreign civilians including a U.S. female diplomat and an Afghan doctor were killed when a Taliban suicide bomber targeted a convoy in southern Zabul province 340 km south of Kabul.
