The Union of South American Nations (Unasur) on Monday praised the high turnout of Venezuelans in their political and electoral affairs, which reflects the same commitment of the voters in the previous presidential elections six months ago.

"We have seen the campaign events, which have been crowded. This is a highly mobilized country, which is very good," said Carlos Alvarez, head of the electoral accompaniment mission of Unasur, during a press conference in a hotel in the capital.

The April 14 elections will elect Venezuela's president among Acting President Nicolas Maduro, opposition leader Henrique Capriles and five other candidates.

Venezuela is a country that has a "great democratic consciousness," Alvarez said, adding he expected a high turnout rate in Sunday's presidential election.

Alvarez said that the world is watching what is happening in Venezuela.

"The whole region, and I think much of the world, is very aware of that here in Venezuela the democracy is affirmed and consolidated," he said.

On April 14, an estimated 18 million Venezuelan voters will go to polling stations nationwide to choose a new president for the South American nation.
