Israeli Economy and Trade Minister Naftali Bennet received hate mail with death threats on Thursday, amid plans to integrate the ultra-Orthodox into the Israeli society.

Bennet, a member of the nationalistic Jewish Home party who had sustained close connections with prominent rabbis in the past, is under fire in the haredi (ultra-Orthodox) community over his plans to integrate them into the workforce and army conscription in order to equalize the burden in the Israeli society.

"A curse upon your house ... You're in for a bitter life; your life is ruined from now on," the letter read.

It also threatened that "all those who hurt the haredim achieved glory, but you'll end up like Sharon," referring to former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, who has been in a coma since 2006 after suffering a stroke.

Bennet's ministry chief has filed a complaint over the letter with the Israeli police.

In a speech he made last week during an economic conference, Bennet said his plan was for the country to gradually reduce its financial support for ultra-Orthodox learning in seminaries.

He said that 21-year-old ultra-Orthodox would be obliged to serve in the army, while some 1,800 could be exempted from service after given a special grant.
