More: Obama says to hold accountable whoever behind Boston Marathon explosions

Barack Obama: "Today is a holiday in Massachusetts -- Patriots' Day. It's a day that celebrates the free and fiercely independent spirit that this great American city of Boston has reflected from the earliest days of our nation.  And it's a day that draws the world to Boston's streets in a spirit of friendly competition.  Boston is a tough and resilient town. So are its people.  I'm supremely confident that Bostonians will pull together, take care of each other, and move forward as one proud city.  And as they do, the American people will be with them every single step of the way."

s Boston Athletic Association
The Boston Athletic Association extends its deepest sympathies to all those who were affected in any way by the events.

BAA statement: "Today is a sad day for the City of Boston, for the running community, and for all those who were here to enjoy the 117th running of the Boston Marathon. What was intended to be a day of joy and celebration quickly became a day in which running a marathon was of little importance. "

        Commentary

 Global Times editorial
The vulnerable structure of modern society determines the long-term harm of terrorism. World powers should never allow terrorism to have even a tiny place in it.

Attacks on civilians are evil. This should become the highest common belief in the world. There should be no division in terms of the motives and target of a terrorist attack. World powers should not tear each other down over this matter.

 Xinhua
If memories of the horrors committed by the 9/11 attackers have faded from the American consciousness, the violence of the Boston Marathon bombings reminded that terrorism still exists.

 The People's Daily
Over the past 12 years the US has waged two wars and killed Osama bin Laden, yet the terrorist attacks continue. This recent bombing will have a lasting effect on US citizens and national policy over the long term.

Li Wei, director of the Institute of Security and Strategic Studies at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations
It is difficult for the US to make more efforts to find the origin of the terrorist attacks because the US prefers to maintain its global strategic interests.

The US should not go its own way, but instead cooperate more closely with the international community on anti-terrorism issues. Only when issues of global terrorism are resolved will pressure on the US be reduced.

 Takungpao.com
The smooth interaction between government, businesses, media and citizens guarantees effective emergency response.

Li Yonggang, a professor with the School of Economics at Shandong University of Finance and Economics
Although a highly developed country which is always playing the part of world peacekeeper, the US often becomes the target of terror attacks. The American dream is beautiful for some but a nightmare for others.

Zhu Kunling, Chief Executive Officer of Puren Charity Foundation
First of all, there are no limits placed on journalists, and live broadcasts were shown online. The police also held press conference immediately, because a rapid response and transparency quells any possibility of panic of rumor. Additionally, Google started a website to aid in locating those still missing after the attack. Thousands of people posted their contact information and locals opened their homes to those from other cities who had participated in the marathon.

Information about important public events should be made public, while the government, media, businesses and citizens need to all work together.
