An Anhui Province man has been accused of selling more than 2,000 pairs of counterfeit Nike sneakers online, Yangpu district prosecutors said Wednesday.

The suspect, surnamed Chen, was charged with selling goods bearing a registered trademark, according to a press release from the Yangpu District People's Prosecutor's Office.

Chen, who had an office in the district, bought the shoes from a manufacturer in Changsha, Hunan Province, for 90 yuan ($14.60) per pair. He then sold them for 199 yuan a pair through the group purchasing website manzuo.com.

Chen had to pay the website 29 yuan for every pair of shoes he sold. Still, prosecutors said he made about 220,000 yuan in profits, minus the money he had to pay a logistics company for transportation.

Police and the local quality control authority began looking into Chen's business after one of his customers complained to police on April 24, 2012 that the shoes he bought online were not genuine Nikes.

The prosecutor's office did not file charges against the website because Chen gave it forged documents that authorized him to sell the shoes, said Yu Dudu, a press officer from the Yangpu District People's Prosecutor's Office. "We can't hold the website responsible because it wasn't at fault," Yu told the Global Times.

The prosecutor's office also urged the local quality control authority to strengthen oversight over commercial websites to better protect intellectual property rights.
