Iconic British car company MG relaunched in Australia this week, under Chinese ownership.

The Chinese consul and representatives from MG Car Clubs around Australia were present in Sydney on Wednesday for an unveiling of the brand's new model, the MG6, and plans for a Sydney dealership.

MG, which stands for Morris Garage, has been present in Australia since 1950, but suffered a hiatus when the company went into administration in 2005 and all production ceased.

Revived by Chinese investment, MG is now "the fastest growing brand in Britain," according to MG Motor Australia director Amanda Han.

The car maker was acquired by Nanjing Automotive Group, China's oldest automobile manufacturer, for 85 million US dollars in 2005, and subsequently merged with the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation in 2007.

2011 saw the launch of the MG6; available in China, Chile, Colombia and the United Kingdom -- with its Australian debut in April 2013.

President of the MG Car Club NSW Stuart Ratcliff said he was pleased to see the new Chinese management handling his beloved brand with care.

Designed by European engineers, the MG6 is "manufactured completely with European standards, and is being sold in 30 countries across the globe," said Han.

The relaunch comes in the wake of Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard's visit to China, and the commitment between the two nations to stronger economic partnerships and trade.
