A recent survey of 1,400 local students found that more than half spend at least 30 minutes every day reading after school, local media reported Monday.

The Shanghai Children's Study Center, which polled students from junior high school and high-level primary school classes, reported that 11.9 percent of the students spent less than 15 minutes a day reading after school, according to a report in the Xinmin Evening News. The survey found that only 35 percent of students read for more than an hour each day.

The surveyed students said that they spent most of their time after school on homework, extracurricular classes, watching television and playing games on the Internet.

The survey also found that about half of the students go to their school library at least once a week, even though 90 percent thought that the library could meet their study needs. Nearly 8 percent of the respondents said they never visited their school library.

On the other hand, the survey found more than 40 percent of the students frequently read online.
