The haze that has hung over Shanghai will clear up before the May Day holiday arrives Monday, the city's weather bureau said Thursday.

The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow haze alert at 10:34 am Thursday, the least serious level of the warning system.

The alert was issued after the level of PM 2.5 in the city rose above 180 micrograms per cubic meter and visibility fell to less than three kilometers with low humidity, said Wu Rui, a press officer for the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Wu reminded residents to wear masks outside.

There was light pollution in the city Thursday as Shanghai's Air Quality Index (AQI) peaked above the 150 mark, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

Pollution levels also rose due to a light westbound wind that carried in pollutants from other regions, said Zhao Qianbiao, a monitor with the center.

The air quality was expected to improve Friday night as the wind picks up, but it won't be strong enough to disperse all the pollution, Zhao said.

A cold front is expected to hit the city Monday, bringing rain that might improve the quality of the air, Wu told the Global Times. The cold air is expected to lower the temperature by 5 C to 6 C.
