The Philippine government said on Thursday it will file tax evasion cases against ousted Chief Justice Renato Corona.

The Justice department said it found "probable cause" to charge the country's former top judge of violating provisions of the National Internal Revenue Code. Cases against Corona will be filed before the Court of Tax Appeals.

The charges stemmed from a complaint filed by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) that Corona failed to file his income tax returns for six taxable years. The BIR said Corona is liable to pay the Philippine government the amount of 120.49 million pesos ( $2.92 million ).

The Justice department said the BIR's investigation into the correctness of the taxes filed by Corona could be traced back to the revelations made during his impeachment trial before the Philippine Senate in May last year.

The former top judge was removed from his post after he was found guilty of not declaring all his assets, including his peso and dollar deposits, and real estate properties.
