A 1-year-old girl was found abandoned in Huajing Park in Xuhui district Saturday evening, local media reported Sunday.

A local resident surnamed Meng found the crying child alone in a baby carriage as he was walking through the park around 8 pm, according to a report in the Xinmin Evening News.

Meng thought the baby's parents had just left the girl alone for a few minutes, so he looked after her while he waited for them to return. After staying with the child for a while, Meng called the police.

Huajing town police officers soon arrived, but did not find the parents at the park. They also didn't find anything indicating the baby's identity or contact information for her family. Officers took her to Shanghai Eighth People's Hospital, where doctors said she had a cerebral palsy. Police said the parents could face criminal charges if they don't reclaim their child as soon as possible. According to China's criminal law, parents can be sentenced up to five years in prison for the charge of abandonment.
