The unfinished Wonder Land amusement park in Changping district will be demolished.

It was supposed to become the largest amusement park in the world in the 1990s, but ceased construction in 1998. A shopping mall will be built on the site, the Beijing News reported Tuesday.

The site of amusement park features the remains of a faux European-style castle. The bare concrete shell has become a destination for many city explorers, especially Gothic types wearing lots of black makeup.

Reignwood Group, the developer of the park, explained that after the 1998 floods along Yangtze River, the government amended their policies on forestry land, making them redesign the usage of the site. Who knew shopping malls prevented flooding better than roller coasters?
