A Tanzanian man has been arrested for stealing about 10,000 yuan ($1,627) in cash and two cellphones from gym lockers that he pried open with his bare hands, Pudong New Area police announced Wednesday.

The suspect committed the thefts in April at two gyms in Pudong, one in the Jinyang community and the other in the Yangjing community, police said. He did not use tools to open the lockers.

A media officer surnamed Wang with the Pudong police said that the suspect has impressively strong arms.

Police arrested him in early May.

Wang said the suspect had spent some of the stolen money and deposited the rest in a bank account.

"He does not have a job as he is here on a tourist visa. He is new to the city," Wang told the Global Times.

There was no record of the suspect entering either gym. Police believe that he snuck in and then scoped out the locker rooms in advance to make sure there were no surveillance cameras inside.

The police's exit-entry administration has notified the Tanzanian embassy about the case.

Police said the suspect has been detained and could face criminal charges.
