Four Shanghai seniors were recovering at a hospital in Xiamen, Fujian Province, Thursday after a knife-wielding stranger attacked them during their trip to the seaside city, local media reported Thursday.

The three men and one woman, all 63 years old, were in stable condition at First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University, according to news reports from Shanghai Television Station and xinmin.cn.

The four were attacked following an altercation with a 47-year-old man from Guizhou Province surnamed Xu while visiting the city's Gulangyu Island Wednesday. The Shanghai residents and Xu got into an argument after they tried to sit on the same public bench where he had been sleeping, according to a post on the Xiamen Municipal Public Security Bureau's microblog.

Xiamen police said Xu's attack left them with stab wounds on their arms and abdomens.

The victims were part of a group tour arranged by the Shanghai Huantianxidi Travel Agency, Shanghai Television Station reported. The agency's chairman said it had paid for part of the tourists' medical expenses.

Police said Xu arrived in the city Tuesday. The Guizhou man could be charged with assault, said a spokesman surnamed Ma with the Xiamen Municipal Public Security Bureau.
