The statistics released by the 14th Save the Children's State of the World's Mothers report showed that Australia has reached the top 10 best countries to be a mother around the world this year, local media reported on Sunday.

The international charity's annual report compared the latest data on women's health, children's health, educational standards, economic conditions and female political participation to rank 176 countries globally and showed where are the best and worst places for becoming a mother.

Australia is also the best place in the southern hemisphere to be a mother, and is the only non-European country in the top 10 ranks, the report said.

According to the report, Finland is ranked as top one on the list, followed by Sweden, Norway, Iceland, the Netherlands and Denmark, Spain, Belgium and Germany.

Among the Asia Pacific area, Singapore followed Australia as the second best place to be a mother in the region, which positioned as 15 on the list worldwide.

Data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in 2011 showed that the median age at childbirth for Australian Women is 30.6 years old and every mother has approximately 1.9 babies on the average.

Annie Bodmer-Roy, senior media manager of Save the Children Australia, said there is not significant difference in the top 10 countries.

"But really I think what we need to look at for Australia is access to education and health for all different groups across the country. It would make a difference in getting us back up there," the local media report quoted Bodmer-Roy as saying.

In terms of the physical, financial and social situation, the more stable and stronger the mothers are, their children are more likely to survive and thrive, the report said.

The report also suggested that the educational situation of mothers would have the prominent influence on being a mother.

On the other hand, the report indicated that countries listed at the end such as Democratic Republic of Congo Somalia and Sierra Leone need to improve their health care and educational conditions for women to have a healthier life.

In 2011, 287,000 women died during pregnancy or childbirth over the world. Every year, nearly 3 million babies die within the first month of life and more than a third of these babies die on their first day of life, which are mostly caused by preventable reasons. Hence the report's theme this year aims at the first day of babies' life.

Save the Children is an international charity, which was established in the United Kingdom in 1919 to provide support and help for children in developing countries.

Despite of the United Kingdom organization, there are 30 other national organizations that are members of Save the Children International working with supporting local partners in over 120 countries around the world.
