A 10-year-old boy was killed Monday in the US state of Texas after being run over by a school bus, state officials said.

The tragedy happened Monday morning when the victim, identified as Haven Lee Norton from the Texas city of Springtown, was trying to catch the school bus, according to local TV channel abc13.

The Springtown Independent School District bus was pulling away after loading students when the boy tripped and fell into the path of the bus, said the report, adding that the boy died at the scene.

The driver apparently did not see the boy, the reported said.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm reports that one of our 4th grade students from Springtown Elementary died this morning as a result of an accident involving a bus. No other students were injured," local education official Mike Kellery said in the statement.

The bus had a driver, a co-driver and four children, and officials said they believed those students already aboard did not see the accident, according to the TV report.
