Russia wanted an urgent international conference on Syria and objected to setting up a no-fly zone in the country, Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov said Tuesday.

"We believe it necessary for the representatives of the (Syrian) government and opposition to find a way to fully implement the Geneva communique of June 30, 2012," Gatilov told the Interfax news agency ahead of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's visit to Russia on Thursday.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry agreed recently that Moscow and Washington would push Damascus and the oppositions to discuss a political solution to the deadly two-year-old crisis.

Gatilov noted Ban shared a similar position on the issue.

Meanwhile, the Russian diplomat criticized the UN Secretariat's approach to Damascus' request to investigate the use of chemical weapons near the city of Aleppo.

"We see the need for the UN Secretariat to respond to that request," Gatilov said, adding the Secretariat's position was inconsistent and politicized.

He also slammed the initiatives to create humanitarian corridors and impose a no-fly zone, saying such decisions were destructive and could only be made by the UN Security Council. "Any such actions decided by other parties are completely illegal, " he said.
