60 people have been injured as two commuter trains serving New York City collided in Connecticut. Five of the 60 have been critically injured.

The accident occured during Friday's rush hour. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said that a train derailed as it headed east from New York City's Grand Central Station to New Haven.

A westbound train on an adjacent track then struck the derailed train. Sixty people were taken to nearby hospitals, but no fatalities have been reported. Some carriages on the second train also derailed as a result of the collision.

The accident has forced Amtrak to shut down service indefinitely between New York and Boston. Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy described the damage as pretty big.

He said, "It's pretty devastating damage to a number of cars. It's clear that these cars came into contact, ripped off at least a portion of siding of one of the cars. Extensive damage in the front and the wheels in that system are sticking into the other train. I think you've seen some pictures. I know that some of the news outlets have, but you probably can't really gauge it until you're right there. It's pretty, it's pretty big damage."
