Film Screening

The 2013 version of The Great Gatsby is currently on show in the US's cinemas, causing quite a stir among film lovers across the world. At this moment, Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum is holding a film screening event looking back at the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby. Before and after the film screening, writer and translator Huang Yuning, and Tang Weijie, literature professor at Tongji University, will participate in talks with audience to share their views on the classic book and the film.

Anne-Marie McDermott Piano Recital

The American pianist, Anne-Marie McDermott has played concertos, recitals and chamber music for almost 30 years, and has performed across the US, Europe and Asia. The breadth of McDermott's repertoire matches that of her instrument, covering everything from Bach, Haydn and Beethoven to Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Scriabin. She also plays works by influential contemporary composers. In addition to being an Artist Member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, she continues to lead chamber music festivals in Florida and Curaçao. For this Shanghai concert, she will play the works of Haydn.

Spectacle: 12 Presentations of Contemporary Museum Architecture in China

As urbanization is changing cities drastically, it has led to a tremendous development of museums as well. The Power Station of Art has invited artists and architects to create 12 artworks of museums, using medium including videos, installations and Internet. Among the 12 pieces of artworks, two were inspired by the host venue Power Station of Art. Zhang Jiajing used profile map of the museum to make it "more accessible" to the audience, while Bu Bing and Chai Tao were inspired by the surveillance camera and video records of the museum and created an installation to discuss the relationship of "to watch" and "be watched."

Group Exhibition: Chinese Garden

Around Space gallery has invited 10 artists from China and Japan to present this group exhibition in Shanghai, featuring paintings and photos of Chinese gardens. More than 20 different types of materials were used by the artists to create Chinese gardens, including silk, rice paper and canvas. Artworks from acclaimed Chinese artists Chai Yiming, Ding Beili and Tang Shu will be showcased during the exhibition.

Li Wei Solo Show: On The Horizon

The solo exhibition from Li Wei examines her artistic practice and engagement in the cultural foundations of traditional Chinese painting. This presentation is the first solo exhibition of Li's work in Shanghai and comprises a selection of new mixed-media paintings. Through a surrounding of landscapes, the exhibition focuses on a central theme of transforming nature into abstraction. The paintings illustrate the artist's emphasis and interest in the traditional aesthetics of Chinese ink paintings from the Song Dynasty (960-1279), especially from the water and mountain paintings of Ma Yuan (1165-1225).
