A 15- year-old boy was killed after an explosive device he was fiddling with accidentally went off in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Monday.
The blast took place at far flung village Bakerwal Khairi in Kither area of Kishtawar district, around 275 km northeast of Jammu city, the winter capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
"A teenager Mohammed Yosuf was killed Saturday after an explosive device (possibly a grenade) he was fiddling with exploded," said a police official. "Reports said the explosive device was actually found by victim's aunt in forests. However, she later on handed it over to Yosuf, who fiddled with it in curiosity."
The woman (Yosuf's aunt) was left unharmed in the blast.
The duo according to police had gone to the forest area to graze their cattle.
During the past more than two decades of ongoing armed insurgency in Indian-controlled Kashmir, many people were killed or left crippled after accidentally fiddling with the explosives or stepping upon landmines planted blindly in the region particularly along LoC.
Rights groups in the region have long been demanding the clearance of landmines and sensitization of the areas in the region.
A guerrilla war is also going on between militants and the Indian troops stationed in the region since 1989. The gunfight between militants and Indian army in Indian-controlled Kashmir takes place intermittently.
