Oscar-winning Czech director Jiri Menzel will be among the jury for the main competition of the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival, the organizers announced on Monday.

A key exponent of the Czech New Wave in the 1960s, 75-year-old Menzel is renowned for blending satire and light-hearted comedy to reveal personal struggle and critique political tumults.

Also a film and stage actor, Menzel boasts a diverse body of work that includes the 1966 feature "Closely Watched Train," which won the best foreign language Oscar, and Golden Bear-winning "Larks on a String" (1969).

Headed by English director Tom Hooper, jury members for the Golden Goblet Award will also include French critic Michel Ciment, German director Chris Kraus, Iranian director Khosro Masoumi, Chinese director Ning Hao and actress Yu Nan.

A total of 12 films from Canada, Bulgaria, Greece, Russia, Sweden, Germany, Turkey, Japan, Korea and China will compete for this year's Golden Goblet.

According to the organizers, these films were selected from 1,655 applications from 112 countries and regions -- a record for the festival, which was founded in 1993.

The 16th Shanghai International Film Festival is scheduled to last from June 15 to 23.
