A local prosecutor's office has dropped a criminal case against a college student accused of selling counterfeit iPhones online, the Xinmin Evening News reported Monday.

The student, surnamed Zhang, sold knockoffs of the popular smartphone over the Internet from January to February 2012, according to the People's Procuratorate of Changning District. On his Web page for the product, Zhang falsely claimed the devices were genuine iPhones.

The prosecutor's office said he swindled three buyers out of 13,300 yuan ($2,112) in total.

The office decided to drop the charge because Zhang turned himself in and his parents gave the victims their money back.

The court also considered that Zhang's university would have to kick him out if he got convicted of a crime.
