Producers are now able to garner Oscar statuettes in honor of the best animated features during the 86th Academy Awards race, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced on Monday.
In the latest change to its rules, AMPAS designates that a recipient with a producer credit is entitled to receive an Oscar, while the film's director or key creative individual gets a second.
A third statuette will also be handed out if two directors were credited.
In previous races, AMPAS either honored a director or a directing team.
Recently, AMPAS also changed its rules concerning the race for the best documentary shorts and foreign language films, allowing its members to see the nominated films on DVD as well as at a theatrical screening.
The change will be a huge boost to producers aiming at getting their credits in the Oscar book.
The 86th Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theater at Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles March 2, 2014.
