The Animals and Children Took to the Streets

Four years after their multi-award winning, critically acclaimed debut Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea, the London-based theater company 1927 returns with its follow-up show The Animals and Children Took to the Streets. In this show, they mix live music, storytelling, high technology and performance with animation, to create a wickedly twisted show and strange theatrical experience, which the Guardian described as a "jaw-droppingly clever and gloriously subversive parable of social mobility, revolution and its suppression."

Awkwardness

The stage drama Awkwardness features world-renowned transsexual dancer and choreographer Jin Xing, and the Peking Opera singer Guan Dongtian as the leading actors. The drama will be staged in Shanghai telling the story of city dwellers going through a midlife crisis.

Anne-Marie McDermott Piano Recital

The American pianist, Anne-Marie McDermott has played concertos, recitals and chamber music for almost 30 years, and has performed across the US, Europe and Asia. The breadth of McDermott's repertoire matches that of her instrument, covering everything from Bach, Haydn and Beethoven to Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev and Scriabin. She also plays works by influential contemporary composers. In addition to being an Artist Member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, she continues to lead chamber music festivals in Florida and Curaçao. For this Shanghai concert, she will play the works of Haydn.

Hu Defu Shanghai Concert

Hu Defu, aka Ara Kimbo which is his aboriginal name, is regarded as the "Father of Taiwan's folk songs." His concert is named after his second album Sky High Mountain Blues. Born of aboriginal parents in Dawu Mountain of southern Taiwan in 1950, Hu has promoted Taiwan's folk and aboriginal culture through his songs and shared his experiences with audience through the power of his music. He also helped to kick off the influential Taiwanese folk movement of the 1970s, which has a long-time impact on the development of Taiwan's local music and the pop music in Hong Kong and the Chinese mainland.

Feng Zikai Cartoon Exhibition

Feng Zikai (1898-1975) is one of the best-known painters in China in the past 100 years. As one of the earliest cartoonists in the country, he is especially known for his simple but interesting drawings. His works have been exhibited in Hong Kong and Taiwan. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Feng lived in Shanghai until he died in 1975. Feng was also the first president of the Shanghai Chinese Painting Academy, founded in 1960.

Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Money

Chi K11 gallery invites 28 artists from home and abroad to create 26 pieces of artworks for this two-month long exhibition. Entitled Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Money, this exhibition features artworks of new media and discusses the relationship of culture and media. Japanese artist Ryoji Ikeda and Chinese artist Liu Zhenchen will bring their latest works to the show.

Ann Niu, a native of Shanghai, has studied calligraphy and ink-brush painting since childhood. After studying art in Japan, and living in South Korea and the US, she returned to Shanghai in 2000 and started experimenting with various media in her work. Her paintings reflect the influences of diverse cultures and artistic forms, including Chinese traditions and calligraphy, Japanese aesthetics and Western modern art. Her new series Together echoes the complexity of relationships and contradictory feelings of people in their urban lives. She uses sparkling and fashionable colors to achieve a striking visual effect enhanced by graceful, calligraphic lines which, in her artistic language, speak about the fragility yet resilience of human nature.

Film Screening

The 2013 version of The Great Gatsby is currently on show in the US's cinemas, causing quite a stir among film lovers across the world. At this moment, Shanghai Minsheng Art Museum is holding a film screening event looking back at the 1974 version of The Great Gatsby. Before and after the film screening, writer and translator Huang Yuning, and Tang Weijie, literature professor at Tongji University, will participate in talks with audience to share their views on the classic book and the film.
