A man surnamed Liu tripped over a stick and fell while walking home drunk at 3 am on September 24 last year. Wrongly believing that the stick had been thrown in his path by someone sitting in a car parked nearby, he began pounding on the windows and kicking the doors. The alarm of the empty car went off, waking the owner who was sleeping in a house nearby. Police were called, and they arrested Liu. The damage to the car was estimated to be 2,696 yuan ($439.51), while Liu's family paid the car owner 5,500 yuan compensation. But Liu was still sentenced to five months' detention by Qingpu District People's Court.
