Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court has upheld its original verdict for a businessman sentenced to six months in jail for illegally purchasing consumer information online, the court said Wednesday.

The businessman, surnamed Xu, 25, appealed the sentence after he was convicted of illegally obtaining citizens' personal information, according to a court press release. Along with the jail time, Xu was fined 10,000 yuan ($1,629).

The Internet company executive, spent 400 yuan in June 2012 on nearly 1 million pieces of personal information about the customers of Yihaodian, China's largest online supermarket. Even after weeding out duplicate information, the purchased data contained details about 280,000 customers. Xu was arrested three months later.

In his appeal, Xu asked the court to reduce his sentence to a 30,000-yuan fine. He argued that he didn't deserve jail time because he didn't profit from the information.

The court refused on the grounds that it had already given Xu a lenient sentence due to his confession.
