Suspected militant commander killed in Indian-controlled Kashmir

A top militant commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militant outfit was killed Thursday during a gunfight with Indian police in Indian- controlled Kashmir, officials said.

A police spokesman said three policemen including a junior level officer were wounded in the gunfight while taking on the militant in Narparistan locality in Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Police cordoned the locality today at around 2:00 am and when the militant commander was asked to surrender he resisted by hurling grenades and was later on killed in the retaliatory fire at about 6:00 am," the spokesman said.

Inspector General of Police Abdul Gani Mir identified the slain militant as LeT commander Hilal Molvi.

According to police Molvi was a local militant and involved in many militancy related incidents.

LeT outfit is accused of carrying out the 2008 Mumbai attack that claimed 165 lives.The gunfight between militants and Indian army troopers in Indian-controlled Kashmir takes place intermittently. A guerrilla war is going on between militants and the Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989.
