Voter registration process begins in Afghanistan

The voter registration process for the upcoming general elections scheduled for April 5, 2014 started in Afghanistan on Sunday, the country's election commission said in a a press release.

"The Independent Election Commission (IEC) is commencing the first phase of voter registration process in 34 provinces today May 26, 2013 in order to allow all eligible Afghan citizens to participate in the coming elections," the statement said.

The process of registering voters for the upcoming elections began in Ghazni and Kandahar provinces this morning, local officials said.

According to the law, anyone aged 18 or above is eligible to vote for presidential and provincial council elections scheduled for April 5 next year.

Voter registration process had been conducted in Afghanistan in 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2009 respectively.
