Pudong New Area People's Court handled 2,952 labor dispute cases in 2012, up 10 percent from the previous year, according to a new report that the court released Thursday.

The court resolved 98 percent of its labor dispute cases last year, according to its White Paper on Labor Dispute Trials.

The court settled 50 percent of the cases through mediation and reached verdicts on another 40 percent. The number of labor disputes filed at the court has fallen since 2010, when the figure surged to 3,500 cases.

The paper asserted that case drop resulted from a more comprehensive legal aid system that has been established for workers, allowing more of them to settle their disputes through government agencies rather than the court system.

Unlike in the past when workers usually filed complaints exclusively over compensation or unpaid salaries, they are now filing multiple claims in each case. In 2012, more than 85 percent of the court's cases had multiple claims.
