Gaze on Fair Ladies

This joint exhibition features paintings by four contemporary female artists who represent different styles of the Shanghai school of painting, notably Wan Fu, famous for her colorful and dreamy flower and bird paintings that give a modern touch to the traditional gongbi painting style (a realistic technique in Chinese painting), and Bao Ying's ink-wash portraits of women. The exhibition also marks the reopening of the Shanghai Art Salon, which has undergone a recent renovation.

Rainbow Danger Club Farewell Performance

Five-piece rock outfit Rainbow Danger Club are playing one final gig in Shanghai before their American frontman returns home. The marathon performance starts at 1 pm and will run until late. Supporting acts include X is Y, Hellhounds, the Horde, Threshold of Forest, DJ Boss, Death to Quitters and Acid Pony Club. Fans and friends of Rainbow Danger Club are all welcome to the party.

Soundscape Concert

James Cohan Gallery Shanghai has teamed up with the French Consulate in Shanghai to present a concert by Soundscape Collective this Sunday afternoon. The Shanghai-based collective is famous for its wide use of traditional folk instruments like the sheng, didgeridoo, harmonium and erhu. This performance is a part of Fete de la Musique, a musical celebration held in over 340 cities in 110 countries and regions around the world. Fifty posters from Danish artist Jesper Just's Venice Biennale exhibition will be given out to early birds.

The Peony Pavilion

Taiwanese playwright Pai Hsien-yung's adaptation of the classic Kunqu Opera The Peony Pavilion returns to Shanghai. The classic story of love and resurrection has been dubbed one of the most beautiful love stories in Chinese literature. Breaking with the tradition of casting older actors, Pai chose young actors Yu Jiuling and Shen Fengying from the Suzhou Kunqu Opera Theatre to portray the teenage lovers Liu Mengmei and Du Liniang, and also condensed the original play. The critically acclaimed adaptation premiered in 2004 in Taipei and has toured countries around the world.

Mayday's Nowhere World Tour 2013

Billed as one of the most spectacular concerts of its world tour, Taiwanese rock band Mayday is set to hold two concerts in Shanghai this July following gigs in Hangzhou, Kunming, Guiyang and Chongqing earlier this year. Formed in Kaohsiung in the late 1990s, Mayday is a five-man alternative rock outfit regarded as Taiwan's most successful band of the 20th century. The band will perform its popular hits, including "Bore to Love," "Time Machine," "Second Round" and "Down to Earth."
