An abandoned suitcase at a park near Changying Mosque in Chaoyang district sparked panic Tuesday among local residents who suspected it contained explosives, the Beijing News reports. Police were called to investigate the suspicious suitcase wrapped in adhesive tape, which later was revealed to contain a dog's carcass.

A witness, surnamed Ma, said she spotted the suitcase at 7 am in the park. Police arrived about an hour later and cordoned off the site, which by then had attracted around 80 onlookers. A police officer, who did not wear a bomb disposal suit, opened the suitcase and discovered the carcass of what a witness described as a golden cocker spaniel.
