After all eight elevators of the Princess Tower in Dubai stopped working on June 10, wealthy tenants of the 101-story luxury residential skyscraper might have to climb 97 floors to go home, reported United Daily News on Wednesday.

A water leak, which was caused by the use of a fire hose on the 96th floor after a problem with the tower's fire alarm system, has lead to the malfunctioning of all elevators in the skyscraper, the news portal reported.

Two emergency lifts were activated but they could only reach the 50th floor, meaning that residents living above the 50th floor needed to use the stairs for the rest of the stories.

The maintenance staff started manually operating an elevator to serve residents living on the 51st to 97th floors 12 hours after the breakdown, a service that was only available after the tenants called the administrator.

A 47-year-old resident living on the 78th floor said that he chose to stay in a hotel instead, but hoped that the lifts could be fixed soon since hotels are pricey in Dubai.

The parts needed to repair the lift have to be shipped from Finland, reported Hong Kong-based Phoenix Television.
