The market-driven world Chinese people know today differs greatly from the "old days" of the planned economy era. As such, even small changes in the market now have a big impact on the way most of us live. It's not surprising then that many Chinese citizens are extremely interested in what experts have to say about the market and the economy.
But a general lack of economic knowledge within the public at large means that many average people are easily misled by media reports featuring experts.
While most responsible commentators - especially those aiming for a general audience - will take pains to contextualize their views and their opinions, the media often twists remarks to make them more snappy and eye-catching. Conversely, in today's fast-food culture, many in the public aren't willing to invest the time to consider carefully articulated arguments. Sadly though, this means that many people are not getting the full story on important issues which impact their lives. I hope that an awareness of this situation will encourage more thoughtful media consumption.
