The deputy speaker of the Iraqi parliament stepped down from his position on Monday without revealing the reason behind the resignation, an official television reported.

"Qusay al-Suhail, First Deputy Speaker of Iraqi Council of Representatives, has officially submitted his resignation from his position Monday morning to the Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, " the state-run television of Iraqia said.

"The letter of the resignation did not mention the reason behind his stepping down," the channel quoted an unnamed source from Suhail's office as saying.

Speaker Nujaifi has not decided on Suhail's resignation yet, the source said.

According to the Iraqi law, the resignation will be presented to the parliament for voting on whether to accept or reject it. If accepted, there will be an alternate member of parliament from Sadr loyalists to be nominated in place.

Suhail, 45, took over his office when the current parliament started its 4-year legislative term in 2010.

He is a member of a movement loyal to Shiite cleric Moqtada al- Sadr.

Recently, Suhail has been in a profound dispute with some politicians over accusing him of hampering questioning of some senior government officials over allegedly charges of corruption, according to local media reports.

Such dispute prompted Suhail's leader Moqtada al-Sadr to pull the rug out from under Suhail's feet when he warned him not to weaken the parliament's role in fighting the corruption in the country, the reports said.
