Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court sentenced a bus conductor to death with a reprieve Monday for transporting nearly two kilograms of methamphetamine from Jiangxi Province to Shanghai.

Yu Laifa, 31, from Jiangxi Province, was charged with the illegal transport of drugs after police found 1,999.76 grams of methamphetamine stashed on the long-distance bus he was riding on January 16, according to the court's verdict. Police made the discovery during a routine check at the Fengjing Inspection Station in Shanghai.

Yu worked for the company that operated the bus and knew its driver. Yu asked the driver to stop and pick him up in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, on the way from Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, to Shanghai, the court said.

Yu brought five bags of methamphetamine onto the bus, which he put in the locker under the driver's seat, according to the court.

Police detained Yu when they found the drugs.

The court sentenced Yu to death with a two-year reprieve, meaning that it will postpone execution of the sentence for two years. If investigators determine that Yu hasn't committed other serious crimes, his sentence will be reduced to life in prison.

The court also seized all of Yu's personal assets.
