A young man has been sentenced to five years in prison for attacking a coworker with a broken beer bottle and attempting to rob a video game arcade in Yangpu district, the local court said Wednesday.

The defendant, surnamed Yi, was charged with intentional injury and attempted robbery, according to a press release from Yangpu District People's Court.

In February, Yi got into an argument with a colleague, surnamed Xu, at a karaoke bar, which culminated with the defendant picking up a broken beer bottle off the ground and slashing Xu in the face.

Police said the victim suffered minor wounds to his face, neck and ears, according to the court.

Later that month, Yi also robbed a video game arcade after he spent 3,000 yuan ($488) there in one day.

After leaving the arcade, he took a kitchen knife and raincoat from the restaurant where he worked and returned with his head covered.

He put the knife to the cashier's throat, told him to open the money drawer and grabbed a handful of cash.

Yi still had the knife when police caught him a short time later.

They found he had gotten away with 240 yuan.

The court also fined him 4,000 yuan.
