MISMA to transfer authority to MINUSMA ahead of Mali polls

The ceremony for power transfer from the African-led International Support Mission for Mali (MISMA) to the UN Integrated Multidimensional Mission for Stabilization of Mali (MINUSMA) will take place on Monday morning, according to a statement from the two missions.

The ceremony will be held between 8:00 a.m. local time and 9:30 a.m at the Bamako International Conference Center, the statement said on Thursday.

The occasion will be attended by the special representative of the African Union, Pierre Buyoya, and the president of the ECOWAS Commission (Economic Community of West African States), Kadre Desire Ouedraogo.

participants also include the African Union's Peace and Security Commissioner Ramtane Lamamra, the special representative of the UN secretary general, Bert Koenders and the UN deputy secretary general in charge of peace keeping operations, Herve Ladsous.

At the ceremony, the MISMA military and police units will exchange their current berets to start wearing the UN's blue berets.

The mission transfer followed the approval by the UN Security Council for the deployment of peacekeepers in Mali starting on July 1. The West African country is scheduled to hold its presidential elections late in the month to end crisis since March 2012.
