An Indian policeman was killed, while as another policeman and a paramilitary trooper of India's Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were wounded Monday in an ongoing fierce gunfight with militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight broke out at village Mandoora of Tral in district Pulwama, around 42 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"One policeman has laid down his life today fighting militants in Tral," said a police official. "Another policeman and a CRPF man were also wounded in the standoff."

A police spokesman said contingents of police, Indian army and CRPF early Monday launched a search operation in the village following intelligence inputs that militants were present in area.

However, gunfight broke out after troopers suspected some suspicious movement and carried an offensive to track down militants.

Reports said three militants believed to be trapped in the area fired at positions of police and troopers.

The wounded policeman and CRPF man were sent to hospital.

Intermittent exchange of fire between the two sides was going on until last reports came in, the police official said.

Last week, militants ambushed an Indian army convoy in Srinagar city and killed eight troopers and wounded several others.

The gunfight between militants and Indian army troopers in Indian-controlled Kashmir takes place intermittently. A guerrilla war is going on between militants and the Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989.
