Fake kebabs

When Xue Chun, a college student at Anhui University, did a DNA analysis of meat skewers from 66 stalls in Hefei, Anhui Province, he discovered that the shish kebabs contained only 19 percent mutton and over 70 percent pork. Some of the kebabs also included chicken or duck. The results surprised his teachers and classmates - and many Weibo users.

Bikachao: Thank God it's not rat meat or contaminated meat.

Damo Kongming: The first time I ever ate shish kebab was in Shanghai, and I could not taste the mutton. The stall owner told me that all the barbecue stalls sold pork instead of mutton in Shanghai.

Beautiful rhythms: If they're using duck, chicken or pork instead of mutton, I can accept that. But did you know the stall owners in Guangzhou actually use rat meat for their skewers? The media has done exposés on it for years, but lots of people still eat them in the summer.

Sharp brother still very sharp: The other day, in Xiamen, Fujian Province, I tried to buy mutton for a beach barbecue, but I could not find any in the supermarkets. In the south, the shortage of mutton is very common, just like fake kebabs. But in the north, you need to verify whether the meat is real mutton or not.

2012aq: Please consider the price of mutton; it has risen to 34 yuan for a half-kilo. But the kebabs are still very cheap, around 2 yuan for one skewer. So you can understand why they use other meats.

Wang YachanYuKi: In my hometown in Henan Province, the chengguan (urban management officers) detained a restaurant owner who used rat meat to make steak. Other fake meat sellers in the market were also arrested. Now I

feel a bit safer about eating meat.

YY is a good kid: I love barbecue and used to eat it all the time. But now I just drop the idea whenever I want to eat.

UncleSpartacus: China is so messed up. As more and more food is revealed to be unsafe, we'll have to DIY everything in the future.

LYQ-blue sky: I love shish kebabs so much. But now that I know those mutton skewers are actually not mutton, I don't really know what kind of meat I am into now.
