Nepal's four major political parties have urged the government not to implement the recent agreement signed between Nepali and Indian authorities regarding the upgrade of the immigration system at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) and setting up immigration check posts at borders, cross-party leaders said in Kathmandu Sunday.

A meeting of UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) concluded that interim election government is not authorized to take such decisions which have long-term implications.

A home secretary-level meeting between the two countries last month had reached an agreement regarding the upgrade of the immigration system at the country's only international airport in the capital and set up Indian immigration offices at the two border cities of Pashupatinagar of Illam district and Lumbini.

"We have warned the government not to take any decision that have far-reaching impact and focus on its main tasks of conducting election," UCPN(Maoist) Vice Chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha told reporters at the four party meet.

The four parties also asked the government not to consider any deal that may have long-term effect. Opposition party CPN-Maoist has already asked the government to roll back the decision, saying that it is a threat to Nepal's sovereignty.

The Supreme Court of Nepal on July 8 also directed the government to halt this process, as the government's plan to hand over the management of airport to India has met with wide criticism.
