New York Knicks small forward J.R. Smith, the winner of last season's Sixth Man Award, had accepted surgery on patellar tendon, and he would be kept out of the court for 3-4 months.

Smith averaged career high 18.1 points and 5.3 rebounds last season. He got 33.5 minutes on court every game night.

Smith became a free agent after the conclusion of last season. Last week, Knicks resigned him with a four-year, 24.7 million dollar contract.
