A security guard suffered a broken vertebra after more than 10 men attacked him at a residential community in Putuo district over a 5-yuan ($0.81) parking fee, local media reported Thursday.

The victim, a 41-year-old man surnamed Liu, stopped his assailant's car Saturday to collect the fee as it entered the community on Tongchuan Road, according to a report on eastday.com.

The two men began arguing after the driver refused to pay the fee. During the argument, the driver began calling acquaintances to come back him up. More than 10 others eventually showed up and attacked Liu, the report said.

Two other security guards came over to stop the fight, including the community's security chief, surnamed Gao. The driver's gang began beating them as well. Liu was sent to the hospital with fractures to his left hand and lumbar vertebrae, the report said. Gao was treated for an eye injury. The other security guard, surnamed Li, suffered minor injuries.

The driver has been living in the community for about three years, but has never paid the parking fees, according to a manager surnamed Huang from the community's property management company.

"We have asked him several times to pay the fee, but we always eventually let him in so traffic doesn't back up at the entrance," Huang told local media.
