The NBA Board of Governors officially approved that Charlotte Bobcats would change the current name to Charlotte "Hornets" in 2014.

The original Charlotte Hornets team was founded in 1988. The team moved to New Orleans in 2002 to become New Orleans Hornets afterwards.

The New Orleans changed the name to New Orleans Pelicans after the conclusion of last season, and the "Hornets" name was available again.
